“All he has done is awakened a sleeping giant named America & she is filled with a terrible resolve…”
(Women’s March Sign, 2017)
I didn't think I would make it to the Women's March. It was a restless morning and a troubling evening the day before. In no way could I bring myself to read any updates on political news January 20, 2017. The reality was that I was furious and felt let down by America, by politicians, by every Republican and Independent I knew who voted for that man, for every friend I knew who did not vote. I remember bicycling over 20 miles and unfortunately was unable to find relief from the aggression. However, like anyone who must go through the different stages of grief, I let the anger seep away and Friday night just felt sad. Sad and sorry for the millions of women like me who would have their rights stripped away, millions of people of color who will be openly ridiculed and victimized, same with the LGBTQ community, same with immigrants, same with people who have a mental illness, are disabled, are in some way, shape or form not considered this person's warped form of perfect. It was not about the people who voted the way they did, it was the why to me that mattered! Since November 9th, a day that will live in infamy, I have found several people who I knew who voted for the person who would now call himself president. What I found was that they didn't do it because they liked him or even because they thought he was the best for the job, it was due to a belief system which he supported and the other candidates did not. What did this all mean? THIS, meaning the big pile of caca that was happening! When I lived in Washington, I devoted several years to fight side-by-side with several others against different forms of oppression and here it was, the day the epitome of a fascist oppressor is given the keys to the White House.
So Saturday morning, I debated getting out of bed. I debated getting dressed in actual clothes versus dressing in a depressing pair of sweat pants and a cozy hoodie (as this seemed perfect for my mood). Instead of going with that part of me that wanted to crawl into the fetal position and hide under my covers, I drug myself out of bed, got some actual clothes on and headed for the Farmers Market as my first stop for the day. I love the farmers market because it is always cheery, people seem sublimely happy and usually, the last thing that is discussed is politics. Yet, there it was. People all seemed a little more solum and reserved. There were fewer smiles and more stoic faces. After leaving that place that was meant to be a pick-me-up, I found that I did what I normally do in times where the bottom of the abyss seems closer as oppose to further away -- I called my parents. While they weren't happy about the day before, they reminded me to not stop what I'm doing just because of one man and what he represents. Then they told me to get out there and find that Women's March...and so I did. I wasn't sure what to expect being that it is Maui and I haven't seen that many women's empowerment programs here on the island. When I pulled up the Maui state college, though, I couldn't be more thrilled. Men and women everywhere. It gave me a surge of hope and a thought that maybe there were people on this island who felt just as sad and angry as I did.
While lucky enough to get some live footage, I found myself pulling out my notebook which my parent had just sent me in the mail -- a little-unexpected gift that was perfect for the occasion. I decided to write down every sign I saw and that is what I wanted to share with you! Here are the gems (Disclaimer, some language may be inappropriate for youth):
